Lawyers from without the Legal Aid Programme appeared yesterday and made a difference, which was notably illustrated in the case of Nazih Tayyar. Charged with torturing the inmates of the notorious Khiam Prison, Tayyar's attorney conducted a professional defence by calling on a number of witnesses, exhibiting medical reports and rounding all with a plea. The sentence handed down was surprisingly lenient. A few of Druze lawyers were not intimidated by the hostile climate and represented some of their coreligionists. Their professionalism was marked especially by raising some legal points derived from the French codifications on collaboration with the enemy, which were passed right after World War II to fill the gap not foreseen by the original codification. One of the lawyers questioned the validity of restraint as a punishment and suggested it be replaced by police surveyance.
